What do you do when the only person offering comfort after tragedy is someone a local legend warns you not to trust? Withered Promised opens with exactly that bind: after a traumatic event, you seek out solace in an old garden legend and meet Azriel, a boy who talks like he’s already made peace with something you haven’t even understood yet.

A Garden Legend Named Azriel

The premise is compact by design — this isn’t a sprawling fantasy epic, it’s a short, focused dark romance built around one relationship and the price attached to it. Azriel is introduced as rational, almost eerily composed, which sets up the game’s central tension immediately: is that calm reassuring, or is it the first sign that something about him isn’t what it seems? The writing leans hard into that ambiguity rather than resolving it early, and “every promise has a price, and some are paid with blood” isn’t just marketing copy — it’s the literal mechanic underlying how the relationship develops.

At around thirty minutes across a full playthrough, Withered Promised doesn’t have room for padding, and it doesn’t try to add any. Every scene is doing narrative work, which is part of why the game reads as tighter and more deliberate than most visual novels attempting a similar tone at much greater length.

Three Routes, Three Different Costs

The game branches into three distinct routes based on choices made during the story, and the endings that follow range from bittersweet to outright tragic — there’s no clean, uncomplicated “happy” resolution built into any of them. That’s a deliberate choice rather than an oversight; the game is explicitly about obsession, grief, and transformation, and letting every route end painlessly would undercut the themes it’s built around.

Replaying for different routes is less about seeing “what else happens” and more about understanding Azriel — and your own character’s obsession — from a different angle each time. Players who’ve been through all three routes tend to describe the experience as cumulative rather than repetitive, since each path recontextualizes details the others left ambiguous.

Withered Promised doesn’t ask for much of your time, but it spends what it takes carefully, and the short runtime ends up working in its favor — there’s no room for the tension around Azriel and the price of his promise to slacken. By the time any of its three endings lands, the game has already made its argument that some comfort comes at a cost, and it never once pretends otherwise.
